Brand-new piece – Romeo and Juliet / Rebellion and Johannesburg

Romeo & Juliet / REBELLION & JOHANNESBURG is Jessica Nupen’s bold and provocative re-telling of the classical Shakespearean story set to the backdrop of a transforming street subculture in Johannesburg. This exhilarating contemporary dance-theatre piece taps into the unique spirit of the city and its changing cultural landscape. Nupen’s creation in collaboration with assistant choreographer Sunnyboy Motau, Soweto-born music pioneer of ‘township tech’ Spoek Mathambo and Johannesburg based designer Anmari Honiball examines the complexities of a generation of young South Africans faced with the challenges of a transforming South Africa. Gender and power stereotypes are confronted in ritualistic ceremonies weighed against a constantly metamorphosing environment in which the dancers find themselves battling for their own survival. Inspired by the dancers’ individual biographies, Nupen creates an edgy new work that uncovers dark and humorous contradictions, expressing a unique response towards contemporary South Africa.
